Qualification Purpose:

This unit equips learners with a deep understanding of the nature, structure, and evolution of the English language. Learners will explore the concept of appropriateness in language use, the purpose and scope of communication, and the influence of social, historical, and geographical contexts on language variation. The unit also delves into error analysis, first language acquisition processes in children, and the evaluation of different teaching methodologies—from formal to communicative approaches. By the end of the unit, learners will have developed a critical awareness of the principles underpinning modern language teaching and how these can be applied in a TESOL classroom.

This unit focuses on equipping teachers with practical teaching techniques, effective use of classroom aids, and approaches to developing the four key language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Learners will evaluate teaching aids, design substitution tables, assess question types, and analyse the use of roleplay, songs, rhymes, and games in language instruction. Emphasis is also placed on developing fluency through drills, comprehension activities, and dictation. This unit develops learners’ ability to design and implement effective lesson plans and schemes of work. It covers defining teaching aims, differentiating between syllabus types, and evaluating course books and teaching resources. The unit explores teacher roles, classroom interaction patterns, and practical planning approaches, including incorporating phonology, error analysis, and vocabulary into lesson structure. Learners will develop and justify lesson plans, assess their effectiveness, and refine their practice through reflective self-evaluation. This unit ensures that teachers are capable of delivering well-organised, learner-centred instruction across varied TESOL contexts.

This unit introduces learners to key linguistic theories and their application in language teaching. Learners will analyse the processes of communicative grammar acquisition, assess learners' communicative competence, and apply metalanguage effectively in classroom contexts. Topics include phonetics, phonology, morphology, transformational grammar, and criteria for lexis selection. Learners will learn to use linguistic texts for instructional purposes and integrate linguistic principles into teaching materials and lesson design. By completing this unit, teachers gain the analytical skills needed to inform and enhance their pedagogical decisions with sound linguistic understanding.
