This unit explores the global significance of English and the fundamental principles that guide English language teaching today. Learners will analyse the status of English as a native, secondary, and international language, and understand the cultural, social, and economic motivations for learning English worldwide. It also introduces the historical development of the English language, including its Indo-European roots and Germanic structure, as well as its evolution under Romance language influence. A major focus is placed on modern teaching philosophies such as behaviourism, audiolingualism, the Natural Way, and humanistic approaches, and how these can be adapted to suit learners’ needs. By the end of this unit, learners will be equipped to make informed decisions about methodology selection and classroom strategies that support diverse learning styles and contexts.
