Qualification Purpose:

The purpose of the qualification is for the learner to attain knowledge and practical competences required to deal with a range of emergency first aid situations. The qualification develops learners’ knowledge, understanding and skills in the following areas: • roles and responsibilities of the Paediatric First Aider in an emergency • assessing an incident • recognising signs and symptoms of injury • responding appropriately to a child or infant: who is unresponsive has an airway obstruction has breathing difficulties suffering from shock. The units have been developed and are supported by the First Aid Awarding Organisation Forum to meet the requirements of the: • Department for Education: Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework – March 2017 • Health and Social Care Board (NI) Childminding and Day Care for Children under Age 12 Minimum Standards • Welsh Government: National Minimum Standards for Regulated Childcare for Children up to the age of 12 years.

Assessment Method:

This unit prepares learners to deliver emergency first aid to infants and children in a variety of settings. It provides the fundamental knowledge and hands-on practice required to handle critical situations safely and confidently. The unit covers essential topics including assessing emergency situations, providing CPR, managing choking, treating bleeding and shock, and dealing with minor injuries like bites and stings. It highlights the differences in care for infants and children and ensures learners understand when and how to act appropriately. This unit is ideal for individuals who work with children or babies—such as early years professionals, school staff, or childminders—ensuring they are well-equipped to respond to emergencies and safeguard young lives.

Successful learners can progress to other qualifications such as:  

• Level 2 Award in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Automated External Defibrillation 

• Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work
